one for the car nuts

Posted on 2001.09.29 at 20:03
today i purchased a red 1985 toyota mr2 (complete w/ rod knock, and no, not that one) for $500.

the rest of it's in pretty damned good shape, and the curb weight is 2400lbs according to the doorjamb. my general plan with this car is a colin chapman approach; simplify and add lightness =)

first plans for it are a later-model non-TVIS 4AG long-block from a '90-92 corolla; these engines are rated at 140hp vs the original 115, and with:
-the power steering and AC removed,
-the water pump replaced with a computer-controlled motor-driven unit,
-the remaining accessories on the engine driven by underdrive pulleys,
-a lightweight flywheel and stiffer clutch installed (might as well while the motor's out),
-the wheels replaced with 15" rota circuit 8's (12lbs! :) and 195/50R15 tires,
-stiffer springs, adjustable shocks, suspension bushings & motor mounts replaced, and
-lightening the hell out of the thing however possible,

i think it'll be an e-ticket ride. after i'm happy with the way it handles, i'll start in on more serious mods to the engine.

i think the thing that makes me happiest right now is that my rent's still paid, and i'll still have enough money for the loan payment due on the 15th whenever my check for the 1st comes from mercanti.

it has occurred to me that i'm incredibly lucky to have 2 contracts right now; and as long as i keep myself ahead on my bills i'll be able to address my remaining tickets and get my license back so i can actually drive this and my other engine-swapped ride.

this makes me feel rejuvenated in a way i'm finding it difficult to elaborate on.

i guess the fact that i can do this makes me feel i've finally started to get back on top of things, financially; i may not be in the classiest living situation i've ever experienced, but what the fuck. i'm 23 and a bachelor. i'm around people i find very like-minded, and i think i may end up happier here than i have anywhere else.

oh yeah, i bought a couple of integrated 100w amps to install in my speaker cabinets from ebay for $59 each.

i'm gonna pick up a couple of cheap JBL 12s for about the same price and then let my good sony amp drive the mid-high speakers in my room, because my silver akai amp is getting kinda flaky.

the sound is good now, when the akai works, but i can't wait to hear what it'll be like with a separate amp driving each of the cabinets... =)

Re: ooh. little tiny cars!

shift later won't be *too* necessary; i've decided to go with the 4AGZE after all... found a place in so-cal that has them for $750 a pop. woo fucking ha. =)

and since you'll be getting it in a crate, it won't be all that much effort to put on a set of cusco pulleys....

and now you're getting me thinking about an AE86 again....

even though i don't speak the language in which this journal entry is penned, your enthusiasm is nonetheless refreshing.

(i thought i already posted this! but it either didn't go through before my computer crashed, or you deleted it, or livejournal's cgi and i are in separate space-time continuums.)
