today we analyzed 3 poems, and the instructor's opinion was that kubla khan by coleridge was all about sex.

http://etext.virginia.edu/stc/Coleridge/poems/Kubla_Khan.html

as he made his argument i started to agree with him.

then i mentioned that i thought the last two lines were talking about oral sex and he nearly spit out his drink and looked at me like i was crazy.

wtf?

dude, ya spent the last hour talking about the phallic fountain and the vajayjay cave, but you're gonna get coy when i mention cunnilingus?

strange society we've constructed for ourselves here...

Hah!

This post made me wish that I knew who you were these days (although, obviously I still do). I was just conversing with someone tonight over my inability to understand peoples' various weird hangups.

Like, it's just sex. Duh.

PS, that poem is about GETTING HIGH. As in he wrote it after TAKING LOTS OF DRUGS. Everyone knows this!

It basically has as much subtext as The Poop That Went Pee.

well yes, he was opium'd out of his mind at the time.

but that doesn't mean he wasn't thinking about sex.

i mean, i understand the argument.

a cave surrounded by a bunch of greenery (as in, bushes)...

a mighty fountain emitting "intermittent bursts"...

and the two lines i was talking about-

"For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
"

idk, maybe i just need to get laid.

I just feel like there's certain English professors who see everything as hidden porn. Surely there's more going on than that, or that the sexual imagery is itself an allusion. In this case, to Kubla Khan's desire to transcend the bounds of material life by building fantastic monuments to his ego.

absolutely. any great art works on more than one level.

i do like this teacher, his class is entertaining, but now that i think about it, i think he mostly likes talking about sex in order to watch his students squirm because that's not a boundary they're used to having crossed.

hopefully he's operating on more than one level as well.

I had some particularly creepy professors as an English major.
