so apparently i'm moving back to norcal.

spending a weekend there with scott and his lovely girlfriend anne, and rediscovering a bunch of people i hadn't seen in half a decade at the "space pirates" party in oakland, made me miss it more than ever, and the gf is losing her current digs in modesto due to landlord dickishness.

i have not managed to fall in love with los angeles, and there's not really anything keeping me here other than the one friend who restored my car while i was overseas.

so i'm finishing this quarter in school, and will be securing a studio apartment for us in august.

i've already applied to de anza for fall quarter. they don't have a pre-engineering program, so i'm changing my major to technical writing. i've only done low-level math and general ed at my current school, so i will likely not lose anything in the switch.

so yeah, that's that. i get a little more sick of facebook every day, so i'm gonna make an attempt to post more on lj again.

yeah, i've been thinking a lot about my choice in major-

working in IT for 8 years absolutely killed computers as a hobby for me; i hate doing my own network admin now (even when it's something cool like setting up a SAN so i can download torrents and play them from my PS3 without swapping around a thumb drive).

i'm sure i'd love being on a Formula SAE team, but eventually i'd kill cars as a hobby also, and i really don't want to do that.

tech writing makes sense because i inherited geekiness from both of my parents, and my mom was an english major for her BA and always proofread every paper i wrote, so i'm pretty good there as well... it never occurred to me, but i think it's a good path.

Yay! We can be De Anza buddies! :D I highly recommend auto tech classes [for obvious reasons].

Wow, on the plus side I get to see more of you. I was happy to have a friend in LA in case I ever really do move though. (Besides nsgrl and sarillion) ;-)

PS good career choice. Engineers usually can't write. I think that's why Eric gets stuck with so much report and proposal writing, which he's good at but doesn't really enjoy as much as the wonkier stuff.

yeah i have a friend who does the same here in LA- and he's got 2 bimmers so obviously not doing too bad for himself.

it didn't even occur to me until i had to pick something other than engineering because de anza doesn't have an AS course for that, but i saw it at the bottom of the list and thought "wow, that makes some sense".

check out university of phoenix as well... other than giving a pointless final at the end of class - i've really enjoyed the program and lack of busy work!

just be sure to stay on top of your shit at UOP... they like to add classes in your program with stuff you don't need & when you transfer in credits, just make sure they use everything they said they would! I'm just speakin' from experience here!

GI Bill doesn't allow you to take online courses, so UOP is not on the table for me, have to do a traditional school.

fuck all this academic bullshit-

design me a contraption that is field-expedient, repairable by farmers, and installable anywhere, that is a self-contained algae ecosystem that has a consistent, measured oil output per day, per square meter of sunlight.
That's a difference to humanity- and a symbol carved on a wall by a primitive culture to denote god status-
...
I'm slightly upset by it, but I'm gaining confidence that what's needed now isn't Einstein/Newton/Hawking levels of revelation, instead it's Carnegie/Rockefeller levels of simple process organization and industrialization-
Railroads, mining, oil etc- nothing revolutionary- just process and packaging :)
