so i've just enlisted in the army, as a national guardsman.

i'll be a medic.

i realize not everyone cares, so i'll make a filter-

wanna hear about my experiences in the military?

yeah, sure

nah, not really

no, and you f***ing suck, you tool-of-W
1(2.2%)

oh, and in about a month, i ship out to basic for 9 weeks and then AIT (job training) for another 19, so when i stop posting for about half a year, that's why.

Sounds interesting. I thought you were still trying to work the dealership things. What made you decide on that? The consistent $$$?

money won't be that consistent as national guard, you only do one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer.

i will be paid for the half-year i spend in basic and training, plus a $20k enlistment bonus (half during basic, half in 3 years), but once i'm out and an EMT, finding a hospital/fire dept/ambulance co to work for shouldn't be difficult.

I did the same thing.. when I was almost exactly your age. It was a good experience for me. I hope you get as much out of it. I would love to hear about it.. so please put me on your filter. :)

By the way.. what is your MOS?

divamatrix at 2006-07-17 23:52 (UTC) (Link)
Ok.. I'm retarded and just noticed the link. sorry.

And holy fucking shit. That's the MOS I would have had except that when I enlisted, they didn't have it. That was what they came up with after the combined 91B and 91C. I was a 91C (practical nurse).. which is now 91W. How fucking weird is that.

it's not letting me take the poll, but if it did, i would pick the first one... =)

best of luck, and i hope this works out well for you. the last person i know who joined the army had it work particularly-not-well. i think you have a bit more sense than her, which should help. ;)

and someone else already asked, but im curious too. were there any particular reasons for this?

i said yeah, sure, for now... this may change though. i'm keeping my opinion of this choice to myself... for obvious reasons. but i want to know how you're doing... so yeah.

Maybe the military will be able to put some bulk on that frame of yours. :P Even if you're still a skinny little bitch when you get back to Portland, I'm more proud of you now than I think I have ever been.

(Can I say that enough? I think this might be like the umpteenth time.)

incidentally, i really think there should have been an option for "yes, and you fucking suck." so, that's my write-in.

love ya babe. seems like you found a direction that could make you happy - proud of you for that.

there's no write-in for a reason- the choice of whether your ideology or our friendship is more important is left to you.

but you already knew i'm a dick like that.

to sum, in a few brief bullet points:

- free college in exchange for ~6 months of training and less than 1 month per year thereafter isn't a bad deal.
- being set up as an EMT and given the chance to save lives (more likely civilian ones at home rather than abroad, as i'm in the NG) seems like a good thing.
- ultimately, i think i'll come out of it a better and more disciplined person.

try and get to the point where you're a licensed nurse.
This offers you the ability to be a paramedic.
Well basically you get damn good pay and you would be in demand and able to work just about anywhere in the world.

Yes post about the military.
Brutal detail please.

part of being 91W is when you finish AIT (training school, after basic) you're a registered EMT1.

so are you active guard or a weekend warrior?
if the latter you still gon live in Portland?

this sounds like a better job than ariel gunner =P
Generation Y's Howard Beale
dk at 2006-07-18 22:50 (UTC) (Link)
the latter, and yes. i'll be stationed in forest grove after i finish BCT/AIT.

i may go active as an officer after i use the gi bill to get a degree, but that decision is still a few years away.
