apparently self-aware programs have existed for nearly two decades... who knew?

quoted from this article:

In 1986 Cyc asked whether it was human. That same year it asked whether any other computers were engaged in such a project.

the company behind the project has already developed real-world applications for the technology, including a partnership with lycos's search engine, and a network modeler/analyzer software package. other stuff is in development (and they're hiring).

check this out, geeks...

it would appear so... i wonder when a copy of their software's gonna show up on some #warez channel, and how long it'll take for someone to insert self-propagation code...

I remember reading about this years ago (in high school), and they "taught" it by reading it news papers and magazines, and it would ask to have things it didn't understand explained. Death took about 3 months to explain, as I remember. At that time it had the IQ of a five year old. I think it could memorizes a great deal, but it will always be lacking original thought. I.e., it can play chess from looking at grand masters games, but will never be able to come up on a variation of it's own or write it's on music. Plus, given the insane amount of data it has, it is limited by the speed of the db's that serve it, but neural nets can partially compensate for db limitations.
